What We Believe

We believe that the God of the Bible is the God of all creation and that he is on a mission to bring about a glorious kingdom here on earth through the power of Jesus the Messiah who died for our sins and who was raised back to life by the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe that he is accomplishing that mission through his body, the Church, and that one day Jesus will return to complete this new creation.

What makes a church Presbyterian?

We are a part of the Presbyterian Church in America. As such, we hold to the system of teachings found in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechisms. While we do not think these documents are perfect, we do believe that they provide a good framework for understanding the Bible.

What does "Reformed" mean?

One of the questions we are sometimes asked is, “What does 'Reformed' mean in the name Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church?” It’s a good question and not easy to summarize in a few paragraphs. The word comes to us out of the 16th century era known as the Reformation, in which certain Christian leaders sought to reform the church. Their emphases can be summarized under the categories of creation and salvation.

Creation

God created the world in order to express his goodness and spread his rule. Everything that was made was pronounced good, including people and trees and animals and fish and planets and dirt. All of it not only tells us something about God, it also tells us something about why humankind was made: to extend God's gracious and loving rule on the earth.

Salvation

But evil, sinful powers entered God’s good creation and severely distorted his good world. So he has been on a mission ever since to restore what he made; to save both people and nature. Sin and its effects are so strong and resistant that it requires God’s initiative and power to accomplish this rescuing. This restoration project culminated in the sending of God’s Son, Jesus the Messiah. By his death and resurrection God has defeated the sin that has distorted his world and set in motion a new power of life that will one day completely reestablish his goodness and rule in creation. It is the church’s mission both to embody and implement this salvation today.
