The Art in Our SanctuaryWe have two major works of art in our sanctuary. Click on the images below to learn more about the work. |
"The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. The things - the beauty, the memory of our own past - are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited." C. S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory Worship and Arts TogetherAs one reads through scripture it is clear that the arts play a pivotal role in the life of the believer, the church, and the world including music, visual art, dance, and literature. These art forms as well as others communicate aspects of who God is and how we fit into his world. In singing songs and hymns, both old and new, and playing our instruments we proclaim that we are part of a vibrant and living faith that transcends time. We proclaim that words are often not enough to express who we are as people. Visual art allows us to understand the created world in ways we had not thought of before. We can dance as we seek to embrace artistic expression of embodied renewal. Our literary endeavors allow us to meaningfully articulate our ideas of the world, both the way it is and they way God will fully redeem it to be. In our worship services we craft our liturgy to help us embody the story of renewal that God is writing in this world as he redeems sinners through the gospel and brings transformation to whole societies through the Church. Opportunities To ServeIn our ministries of worship and arts at Westminster we seek to employ a variety of forms of artistic expression as we communicate to others the beauty and complexity of God and his world. Some of our ways we accomplish this include the following:
Service TimesWe offer three identical services at 8:15, 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. each Sunday. What To ExpectWe believe that worship is what we humans do every day. Whether you sacrifice to an idol, a volcano, a job or a cause, you worship something. As Christians we have the privilege of finding in Christ our greatest joy and the satisfaction of our deepest longings. So it is with joy and reverence that we gather together every week to worship as a community. We don't expect people to wear certain types of clothes or be able to sing in tune. What we do expect is for people to come ready to offer to God all their affection, adoration, service and praise. As a part of our worship services we
We are a very eclectic group, and the way in which we express our worship demonstrates that. While some people "enjoy worship" in different ways than others, our primary concern is whether God himself enjoys our worship! |
